By: PR Newswire Association LLC. - 16 Feb 2018Back to overview list

LAUREL, Md., Feb. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) took another huge step today toward improving the training of OB-GYN ultrasound residents by releasing the OB-GYN Ultrasound Lecture Series.

This series of 32 lectures, presented by OB-GYN ultrasound experts, provides residents with a strong foundation in the performance and interpretation of OB-GYN ultrasound examinations. This work builds on and complements 2 recently published articles addressing resident education: Proceedings: Beyond Ultrasound First Forum on Improving the Quality of Ultrasound Imaging in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Obstetric and Gynecologic Ultrasound Curriculum and Competency Assessment in Residency Training Programs: Consensus Report.

"This valuable product was a collaborative effort that addresses each of AIUM's 5 key values," said AIUM President, Brian Coley, MD, FAIUM. "The lectures and self-assessments contained within this resource are designed to improve training that will ultimately lead to improved patient care."

Led by Wesley Lee, MD, FAIUM, the OB-GYN Ultrasound Lecture Series builds on the Ultrasound First work initiated by AIUM Past President Alfred Abuhamad, MD, FAIUM, and is the result of several projects spearheaded by AIUM Immediate Past President, Beryl Benacerraf, MD, FAIUM.

The AIUM is making this resource available for free through support from the Endowment for Education and Research. Viewers will be able to watch the lectures, download the slides, and take a self-assessment to gauge their learning. Here is a sample of the topics covered:

  • Safety
  • Adnexal Masses
  • Uterine Bleeding
  • AIUM's Practice Parameters for the Performance of Obstetric Ultrasound Examinations
  • First Trimester Evaluation
  • Fetal Growth Assessment
  • Pelvic Pain Evaluation
  • Twin Gestation

The lectures provide practical clinical information and are filled with images that illustrate all aspects of a basic ultrasound examination. Representative examples of pathology are included to assist students and viewers with understanding those abnormalities for which ultrasound can be used to identify.

This resource was developed in partnership with CREOG, ACOG, ACOOG, ACR, ISUOG, SMFM, and SRU.
